Do you recycle? The answer might seem obvious, but a new study commissioned by L’Oréal Paris suggests a number of us actually run into confusion where recycling and sustainability are concerned – especially in our bathrooms. According to the research, 19 per cent of us in the UK are unsure what is meant by the term “sustainable”, 44 per cent find recycling logos confusing, and one in 10 wrongly thought a lot of bathroom waste isn’t recyclable. It’s scary stuff.
That said, the stats also indicate that the state of the planet has never been more important to us. So, we either need to swot up on recycling, or the brands we buy need to make it far more clear what can and can’t be recycled. Which is exactly what L’Oréal Paris has done off the back of the revealing research. Its Elvive shampoos and conditioners (and other hair products) are now made with 100 per cent recycled plastic and sold in recyclable packaging. The initiative will save an estimated 7,000 tonnes of new plastic globally every year. To give you an idea of just how much that is, it would weigh almost as much as the Eiffel Tower.
